BACK TO THE BASICS: PRISON HEAD ADDRESSES CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

MINFO

The Fiji Prisons and Correctional Services commissioner Colonel Ifereimi Vasu did not mince his words when he told his men at their first parade for 2013 to touch up on their basics to curtail prison breaks.

Addressing offficers at the Naboro Prisons facility this afternoon, Commissioner Vasu reminded officers on their duty to the nation.

?We will work on improving on our core service in terms of safety and security, that?s one area we have to really work this year,? he said.

Commissioner ?Vasu said they will reinvigorate their awareness and rehabilitation works to strengthen their work.

?We will be looking at how we do rehabilitation which will address the core of the offending behaviour rather than the circumstances, which is something we will do this year to ensure that we go in line with what Government wants from us,? he said.

One of the issues that had been identified for prison breaks, the shortage of manpower, Commissioner Vasu said that this is being addressed with the Prisons Department recruiting 105 more personnel who will be going through 12 week training.

?Due to the shortage we have we will combine it (training) with on the job training and this will help us with the manpower issue we face,? Col Vasu said.

The commissioner is happy with his budgetary allocation for 2013 and one of his capital projects for the year is improving the CCTV cameras in Naboro and other prisons facility.
