TOURISM stakeholders have high expectations of graduates from tertiary institutions? such as ?Fiji National University. Tokatoka Resorts General Manager Jack Stark said the industry expected student attaches to know the basics.? Mr Stark said the tourism and hospitality industry was a ?people industry?.
He said it was important for students to get the basics right in training while in an institution such as FNU before heading out into the industry.
?It?s about having the ?Can Do? attitude. First impressions are always a lasting impression.?
?As an hotelier, I expect the best from my staff and likewise from students on attachment. You must develop good habits and the best place to get all this in order is here in school.?
Mr Stark made the comments while addressing HTS students on ?FNU?s Nadi Campus. ?Industry representatives spoke on the following:
- Industry expectation from FNU/HTS graduate
- Ethics of the hospitality industry
- The importance of team work
- Modern trends? in the industry
Local celebrity chef Lance Seeto reminded students that they needed passion and drive to work in the industry.
I It was about going the extra mile, he said.
?What keeps me here compared to any other place in the world is your country. And you students need to understand that the hospitality in Fiji is like no other.?
?Fiji has the experience you can?t get anywhere else in the world.?
?I have been fortunate to learn that in the four years I have been here as a chef on Castaway. It?s about happiness, it?s about contentment and it?s our people.?
