Recognising the vital link that the Vunidawa Road holds for surrounding communities in the Naitasiri province has prompted road authorities to carry out maintenance works.
As part of its road maintenance strategy, the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) carried out stormwater clearing and re-grading works along the side of the Vunidawa Road.
The authority?s chief executive officer Neil Cook said that?these works is in preparation for additional protective metal to be placed on top of the road (re-sheeting).
?The?FRA?s focus on rural roads is equally important as those in urban areas,? Cook said.
?Proper drainage construction is crucial in maintaining roads as in the case of Vunidawa Road. As well, heavy rain results in blocked drains making it difficult for vehicles such as buses to maintain access.?
Prior to the roads being built, the five rivers that flow through the Naitasiri province were the main avenues of travel.
