Government is on target to meet its objective of providing affordable energy needs to more than two thousand rural and remote households around the country by the end of this year.

Department of Energy?s Rural electrification assistant director, Pranil Singh said the department has met more than half of its target in the first six months of the year.

“Right now we have completed more than 1600 homes and this has been through Governments effort to assisting families with better energy sources,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh said the rural electrification programmes are fully funded by the Fijian Government to assist families in rural outer islands towards better living.

“The idea was brought by Government to assist families living in villages especially those in the most remote of places where the Fiji Electricity Authority grid does not reach,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh added that the energy sources used for the programme are conducive to the surroundings of each village and settlment including solor energy, diesel and bio-fuel.
