The newly established Fiji National Sporting Commission is reaching out to rural communities to use sports as a catalyst for socio economic development.
The Commission?s chairperson Mr Peter Mazey highlighted this following the commencement today of a sporting outreach program in Dreketi, Vanua Levu.
Targeting more than 104 youths in 18 villages and settlements across Dreketi, the program is designed to introduce new sports, coaching clinics and at the same time develop attitude and discipline towards these sporting programs.
?The target of this outreach program is the community and the youth at various age levels. The request for this came through from the Provincial councils to assist villages by using sports to occupy the youth in these areas. So while the program is for the youth, it will see the collective involvement of village elders and leaders?.
The sports program will cover topics like basic sports specific skills teaching, rules of sports, physical education, coaches education, sports administration, Nutrition and Diet, Basic leadership skills, Physical activity and health theory session. ?This program will also see the participation of players, coaches and sports administrators in the community. Schools from within the vicinity will also be nominating teachers to attend so they can also be part of the coaches? and trainers education sessions?, Mr Mazey said.
