FIJIAN ARMY COMMANDER’S UPDATE ON PEACEKEEPING TROOPS

Local authorities continue to work with the United Nations and the countries that can influence Fiji?s position in Syria regarding the detainment of Fijian peacekeeping troops.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga said that Fiji’s Foreign Ministry is also working closely with its foreign missions to engage with countries of influence to assist in the negotiation process.

Commander Tikoitoga said that while the situation remains unchanged, he said that the contribution and commitment so far by the international community including the UN is positive.?

?The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with all our missions overseas to put pressure on those countries that can be of assistance with those on the ground.”

?We are in daily contact with our other peacekeepers and also with our Permanent Representative to the UN?.

Commander Tikoitoga said that the nation must remain united during this period and continue to pray for the safe return of the peacekeeping troops while negotiations for their release continue.
