OCEAN ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

The Ocean Engineering Technology Workshop for Climate Change Adaptation?was held on the 30th?January 2015 in Suva.

The workshop was convened in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).

The workshop seeked to engage and involve the Pacific Community in discussing and assessing potential Korean technological applications for Climate Change Adaptation. These technological application examples include reclaiming land from the sea, building coastal defences and artificial islands, desalination and OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion).

Ocean thermal energy conversion?(OTEC) uses the temperature difference between cooler deep and warmer shallow or surface?ocean?waters to run a?heat engine?and produce useful work, usually in the form of electricity.

The Korean delegation to this Workshop includes Mr. Chang-hee KANG, member of National Assembly and the former Speaker of National Assembly, Mr. Sung-jin KIM, the former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries and Dr. Sang-hyun SUH, President of Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).

KRISO, established in 1973, is a leading research institute in technology development in ships and ocean engineering. KRISO conducts research in a range of areas, including environmentally friendly future shipping technology, ships and ocean engineering technology, maritime accident response and marine traffic system technology, and underwater robot and maritime equipment technology.
