NATIONAL POPPY APPEAL LAUNCHED

It is that time of the year where ex-servicemen and their families gather to commemorate the lives of the fallen soldiers.

About 20 ex-servicemen, military officials, Ministry of Defence officials and other stakeholders were present at the official National Poppy Appeal in Suva yesterday.

While launching the event, Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration Hon. Timoci Natuva said it signified courage and commitment shown by our soldiers.

“The launching of the Poppy Appeal marks our continued recognition of the priceless sacrifice made by the sons and daughter of Fiji, who have served in the Fiji armed forces during the First and Second World War,” Minister Natuva said.

“I call upon all Fijians to support this campaign and the Ex-servicemen Association to remember the fallen soldiers.”

Returned Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Association president, Ratu Peni Volavola encouraged all Fijians to support the National Poppy Appeal.

“The peace and harmony we have today is something we should not take for granted. The ex-servicemen put in a lot of effort and because of their sacrifice, we are here today,” Mr Volavola said.

Mr Volavola said money collected through the Poppy Appeal will go towards the Ex-servicemen Association.

The National Remembrance Day will be on November 11th?and Mr Volavola says plans are underway in the divisions to commemorate this event.
