Australian Matt Wilkinson was crowned champion of the Outer Known Fiji Pro and was also capped the new Jeep Leader of the World Surf League at the Cloud break off Tavarua Island Resort yesterday.
Wilkinson defeated rookie and fellow countrymen Connor O’Leary in a much anticipating final where he worked his skills in the final 5 minutes.
He went home with US$100,000 while O’Leary returned with US$50,000 richer.
“For the start of the event I felt I had a lot of momentum. The fight was unbelievable as I drew up a big score and the momentum kind of shifted and I got smashed in the reef,” he said.
He also said he wouldn’t want to settle in second place any more as he did in last year’s Fiji Pro which was won by Gabriel Medina of Brazil.
“This is the best event ever in the world. I felt I surfed really well and I am pretty excited about it.”
