Close to 100 students from Moala and Matuku islands will benefit from transport assistance provided to Cakova District School and Delaiverata District School in the Lau Province.

Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy handed over two boats and engines to the school representatives in Suva today.

Minister Reddy said the assistance was part of Government’s commitment to ensuring students in maritime areas had access to better educational facilities as those in urban schools.

He said the ministry had plans of providing assistance in the early childhood education (ECE) areas.

Cakova District School representative, Filipe Jitoko thanked Government for providing assistance to their children.

“Our children have faced difficulties in reaching their schools on time but now we are happy that the new boats will make their lives easier. Children from other schools on the islands will also use the boats,” Mr Jitoko said.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has so far assisted more than 55 schools with boats and engines under its transport assistance programme.
