The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management today received a donation of 14 water tanks from the Latter Day Saints Church in Fiji.

Each with the capacity to hold 10,000 liters of water, the water tanks will be distributed by the Office of the Divisional Commissioner Eastern on the island of Koro to ensure access to clean and safe water.

While speaking at the handover ceremony, Kamoe Varea, the Suva-Fiji Stake President of the LDS Church said that the charity arm of the church made the donation possible.

Mr. Varea said, “I pray and hope that the water tanks that we have presented this morning will ease their life and burdens and that they will be able to have fresh water after the cyclone that devastated the island of Koro.”

In receiving the water tanks, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Hon. Joeli Cawaki conveyed the Fijian Government’s appreciation to the LDS Church for the kind gesture and indicated the water tanks would assist with cyclone rehabilitation works on the island of Koro.

“Koro is one of the most devastated areas and this contribution by the LDS Church will enormously assist in the rehabilitation and the efforts of Government in bringing normalcy to the communities in Koro”, Assistant Minister Cawaki said.

He added that the handover exemplifies the success of partnership between Government and civil society.
