USP Lautoka Campus hosts online computer quiz for the Western Zone

Twenty eight schools in the western division participated in an online computer quiz, hosted by the University of the South Pacific (USP) Lautoka Campus.

The Western Zone Category winner, Tilak High School from Lautoka, won a Shield whilst the students received a Dell printer each. The second and third winners in this category were Votualevu College and Xavier College whose participating students received tablets and media players respectively.

Seventy-seven schools participated in this online quiz conducted by USP and held simultaneously in USP?s six campuses in Fiji and around the region on Saturday, 27th July.

Organized by the South Pacific Computer Society (SPACS), the quiz covered six zones namely Fiji North Zone, Fiji West Zone, Fiji Central Zone, Samoa Zone, Solomon Islands Zone and Tonga Zone.

The one-hour quiz was aimed at creating awareness on ICT related issues in the South Pacific, was thus based on general knowledge questions related to Computer Basics & History, Computer Hardware & Software, Information Systems, Systems Analysis & Design, Word Processing & Spreadsheets, Data Communications, Database Management, Programming and ICT General Knowledge & Current Affairs.

Rishikul College of Nasinu was the Fiji Central Zone category winner as well as the Fiji national and overall regional winner.

This year?s quiz was sponsored by USP?s Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE), Graphic Equipment (Office Products) and Vodafone.

The quiz was targeted at Form 6 and Form 7 students and each team comprised of two students who were accompanied by a teacher.? A certificate of participation was presented to all participating students.

The coordinator of the West Zone, Dennis Sen of the Lautoka Campus, said this year?s quiz featured a professional development survey quiz for the school teachers accompanying each team. He said the feedback from the teachers would help SPACS in identifying courses or topics related to IT for organizing future training programmes for high school students.

USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr. Pramila Devi presented the prizes, certificates and awards to the participants.
