John Wesley and Marist win in U18s

By LAURA MACINTOSH

John Wesley College and Marist Brothers’ High School both had wins in the first matches of the under-18s category of the Suva Secondary Schools’ Competition at Albert Park last Friday.

In the first hardball match, Marist took on the mixed side from Dudley High School.  Winning the toss, Marist chose to bat first and made 2-69 off their designated ten overs.  Fijian Under-19 representative, Sagaitu Konusi, top-scored with 22 not out, whilst Iniasi Cakacaka Jnr was best for Dudley with the ball, with figures of 1-17.

In the second innings Dudley seemingly couldn’t match the experience of the Marist team, falling short by three wickets after reaching 5-53 at the end of their ten overs.  In what was surely a Man of the Match performance Sagaitu was also the best for his team with the ball, taking one wicket and conceding only eight runs.

On the other ground, John Wesley played Ratu Finau Secondary School. Best Wicket taker, Metuisela Beitaki led the team alongside his pal and team mate,  Delai Sokoiwasa with a wicket each and Beitaki with 5 runs whilst Delai with 9 runs.

On the second innings the team proved too powerful for the Lauan lads of Ratu Finau Secondary School as top scorer Akaripa Tuinasau led the team into victory with 11 runs.

The Suva Secondary Schools’ Competition will continue this Wednesday when Adi Cakobau School meets Gospel High School While Lomary Secondary School meets the ladies of Delainavesi, Ballentine Memorial School.
