POLICE NEWS UPDATE 09.04.13

1. Suicide

Despite so many awareness and warning police continue to receive suicide and attempted suicide reports.

Yesterday four cases were reported to police.

In first incident a 15 year old form 4 student of Rishikul College was found hanging from the rafter of their house with a sari. The deceased was living alone with his mother.

The body is now kept at CWM hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem.

In second incident a 40 year old salesgirl of Koronivia consumed a glass of paraquat.

The victim was conveyed to Nausori Health Centre where she was admitted under observation and later died. The body is now kept at Mokani mortuary awaiting post mortem.

In the third incident a 33 year old male of Korovou, Deepwater settlement consumed a glass of paraquat at his residence after the woman he was having affairs with called and informed him that her husband found out about their relationship. He was conveyed to Korovou Hospital and admitted under observation but later died.

In fourth incident a 24 year old male, self employed consumed ¾ glass of weed-killer (2.4 D-Amine 720) after a dispute with his wife. The victim was conveyed to Ba Mission Hospital and is admitted at Men’s Ward under observation.

Meanwhile, a 67 year old female of Walana, Vunivutu, Labasa who consumed ½ glass of chemical Amane died yesterday at Labasa Hospital.

Police have recorded 39 suicide and 48 attempted suicide cases so far this year.

2. Drugs

A 36 year old female from Vitawa village, Ra who is staying in a defacto relationship found a plastic of dried leaves believed to be marijuana under their mattress and handed it to Police. The dried leaves were send for analysis and the suspect is yet to be arrested.

Meanwhile, in Clay Street, Nadi Town, police have arrested a 29 year old of Nakurakura, Nadi for being in possession of dried leaves believed to be marijuana wrapped in newspaper. The suspect was interviewed and the leaves were sent for analysis.
3. Case of Interest

A 23 year old chainsaw operator of Malolo, Nadi while cutting a log with a chainsaw when a branch broke off and hit the victim.

He received injuries on his head, hand & chest. He was rushed to Sigatoka Hospital where he was transferred to ICU, Lautoka Hospital.

In another incident an 18 year old farmer of Veilili settlement, Dawasamu was cutting a coconut tree when it tree fell on nearby trees then slid across and hit another 40year farmer who wanted to drink coconut juice. The victim received injuries, conveyed to Korovou Hospital and later transferred to ICU Ward, CWM Hospital on life support.
