REDUCTION IN AIRCRAFT EMISSIONS TO BE ADDRESSED IN WORKSHOP

Nadi, August 15, 2013. Fiji’s Attorney General the Honourable Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum (PICTURED ABOVE) officially opened the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji’s (CAAF) State Action Plan to address aircraft co2 emissions yesterday at the CAAF Headquarters in Nadi.

The Singapore head of delegation who also spoke at the opening supported his comments.  The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is conducting the workshop.

The workshop is being conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and is focusing on developing a State Action Plan to address the aircraft co2 emissions that have an adverse effect on the environment.

When completed the plan will not only be submitted to the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) with the specific measures that have been or will be taken to address CO2 emission reduction, but will also indicate what will be required to implement it.

The CAAS facilitators for the workshop are

  • Poh Eileen Li Mein (Ms), CAA Singapore, Director (International Relations).
  • Ng Yip Keong (Mr), CAA Singapore, Deputy Head, Certification, Airworthiness/Flight Operations Division.
  •  Lim Jian Liang Karl Michael (Mr), CAA Singapore, Executive (International Relations).

Commenting on the event, CAAF Acting Chief Executive, Isei Tudreu reiterated that the Authority was grateful to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) for providing the expertise and the confidence in Fiji as a host nation to organize the workshop and especially wanted to thank the Attorney General and the Government for their continuing support in underpinning the strength of CAAF.

Both Fiji Airways and the Air Navigation Service Provider AFL will play a major role in the workshop with CAAF, the Department of Environment, and the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics also expected to be among the participants.

“We expect those involved with the implementation of green initiatives and the provision of data and computation relating to CO2 savings that would be needed for the preparation of the State Action Plan to attend,” said Mr. Tudreu.

The workshop evolved from a 2007 ICAO global target initiative to create a carbon dioxide standard for aircraft by 2013.

ICAO is a United Nations Agency with 192 member countries (including Fiji). Amongst its functions it supports all aspects of civil aviation including setting policies.

Those participating in the workshop will study the processes involved in the preparation and development of the State Action Plan, be exposed to hands-on training on how to use and improve on the calculation tools to compute the benefits that could be derived from the CO2 emission savings.

The 37th Session of ICAO Assembly held in Montreal in December 2010 adopted Resolution A37-19 titled “Consolidated statement of continuing ICAO policies and practices related to environmental protection – Climate change.”

This resolution, solidifies goals and systems initiated at the last session of the ICAO Assembly in 2007, which saw the creation of: a global target of improving aviation fuel efficiency 2% per year up to 2050; a framework for development and deployment of alternative fuels; and a target to create a carbon dioxide standard for aircraft by 2013.
