There is a raise in concern for the increasing number of reported cane fires in the Western Division since the 31st of August till today another 12 cases have been recorded in the West with an estimated cost of damage of over $55,000.

Six reported cases are from Ba while another 6 are from Nadi.

While investigations continue the high number of cane fires continues to be of concern considering the loss generated to Fiji’s economy as earlier mentioned by the Permanent Secretary for Sugar.

“We are therefore once again reiterating the warning by the Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua to those who are illegally burning sugar cane,” Police Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said.

“As of last Friday there were a total of 342 setting fire to crop cases reported since the beginning of the crushing season resulting in the loss of millions of dollars to the sugar industry,” she added.

Meanwhile, a directive has been given to officers to take individuals found committing these acts to task.
