Nadi, Fiji: Tuesday 21 October 2014 – Tourism Fiji has welcomed the strong overseas visitor arrivals result for September. Provisional results released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics show that Fiji welcomed 64,053 visitors in September, an increase of 4.5% on September 2013.
This result continues the positive trends seen throughout 2014, which show that visitor arrivals are up 4.2% compared to the first nine months of 2013.
“We are obviously pleased that Fiji is welcoming more visitors to our country. In fact, in the first nine months of 2013, Fiji has welcomed more visitors than any year in history,” says Tourism Fiji’s Acting Chief Executive Ken Freer.
Should current trends continue, Tourism Fiji expects the country to receive more visitors in 2014 than the previous record of 675,000 visitors in 2011. However, Mr Freer sounds a note of caution.
“It is important to remember that increasing visitor arrivals, while very important for the health of our tourism sector, is only one piece of the puzzle. It is equally important to ensure these visitors are staying longer and doing more while they are in Fiji. It is through this that we will truly derive the most value for our tourism sector,” says Freer.
September’s provisional visitor arrival results showed strong increases for New Zealand (up 14.7%), the United States (up 15.1%) and China (up 25.0%), while a small increase was recorded from Australia (up 0.4%).
