HWPL Peace Academy MOU Signing Ceremony

On 22 February, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Kingdom of Cambodia (MoEYS) hosted “2019 Launching Ceremony of the MoEYS-Affiliated HWPL Peace Education Committee, the Kingdom of Cambodia” at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. About 1,000 participants including Secretary of State of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, peace delegates from an international NGO, educators, and students attended the event.

MoEYS has cooperated with the international NGO under the UN ECOSOC, called Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), since last September where they signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for “Peace Education”. Pilot education programs applying “HWPL Peace Values” have been carried out in the primary, secondary, and high schools in Cambodia since this January.

During the event, the HWPL Peace Education Committee was appointed, and further action plans to execute peace education were discussed. HWPL pledged to promote peace education across Cambodia by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for HWPL Peace Academy with 19 other schools.

H.E. Kim Sethany, Secretary of State of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, said “I think that this seminar for the promotion of peace education will enable students to clearly understand and appreciate the value of peace, to share the knowledge they have learned, and to contribute to peace-building of the nation and the world”

According to the HWPL official, it has signed MoAs for peace education and peace school with 189 schools in 20 countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the United States. This committee, which is particularly organized under the Ministry of Education, is expected to take part in researching and planning for peace curriculum to plant peace spirit to the future generation leaders.

Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL delivered a message, “Educators should teach good things and students should learn them. And we have to make a peaceful world with the heavenly culture. So, if all of the hearts for peace are gathered and everyone works for peace, the peace we want will come.”

Peace education, one of the main initiatives of HWPL, is intended to cultivate the individuals with the values and spirit of peace. In this regard, schools designated as HWPL Peace Academy have carried out peace educational programs every semester
