Friday, 19 April, 2013 – Digicel Fiji today announced its support for the Lelean Memorial School’s rugby team with a sponsorship of $4,000. The sponsorship will assist the team with its annual rugby tour of New Zealand.

Digicel Fiji’s Public Relations and Sponsorship Manager Zaheer Hassan states, “Digicel is proud of the boys who have performed extremely well over the years. Our relationship with Lelean Memorial School has flourished since we came on board as sponsors five years ago and we are looking forward to supporting the school in future. The team’s bonding trip will allow students to get exposure.”

“Today, the sponsorship announcement coincides with a coaching clinic conducted by Digicel Brand Ambassador and renowned referee James Bolabiu. This is to assist the team with their preparations. They will learn new techniques which will immensely benefit them during the tour,” said Mr. Hassan.

Lelean Memorial School Marketing and Team Manager Filipe Senibua states, “Lelean is proud to have Digicel as major sponsors of our rugby team. They have been supporting us for the past five years and we are extremely grateful to Digicel for this kind gesture”.

“Our rugby tour to New Zealand is a bonding trip for our team and we will do our best to bring back the trophy this year. This is an opportune time for us to promote the Fijian culture in New Zealand and also strengthen ties with our sister schools there,” said Mr. Senibua.

“This is also an educational tour for our students who will be taking classes and helping out in projects prepared by the four schools that we are going to visit during this tour,” he said.

Mr. Senibua added that Digicel’s assistance had made a huge impact in grooming young rugby players and developing them into rugby stars. “Since its establishment in 2001, Lelean Memorial School’s rugby academy has produced outstanding rugby players including Seremaia Bai, Sireli Naqelevuki, Kameli Ratuvou, Napolioni Nalaga, Alipate Raitini among others,” said Mr. Senibua.

The establishment of the Lelean Rugby Academy has had a great impact in the development of Secondary school rugby. Many budding rugby players have gone through the system and have successfully become professional rugby players.

These players have represented Fiji and have brought glory to the country. Lelean Memorial School supports the vision of Fiji Rugby Union and Digicel to develop rugby in the country at professional and grassroots levels,” said Mr. Senibua.

The Lelean Memorial rugby team departs for New Zealand on Monday 29 April.
