Lautoka hosts Indo 7s tourney

A Indo 7s competition organised by the Lautoka Indo Rugby Union will be held this Saturday.
The one-day competition will be held in partnership with the Veiysana 7s at Churchill Park, Lautoka to allow for Fijians of Indian descent to get involved in the national sport.
10 teams are set to compete for the tournament that has attracted six teams from the West and four from the Central division. Tournament coordinator Aaron Phillip says the interest amongst the Indo 7s teams is soaring since the Rosy Hearts Fiji Indo tournament in September last year.
The confirmed teams for the tournament are Nakasi Highlanders, Uni Babas, Nadi, Lautoka Blues, Lautoka Maroons, Ba, South Seas Cruisers, Central College, Phoenix and Wainivula Eels.
“The whole idea behind the tournament is to promote the sevens game and encourage Fijians of Indian descent to grow and develop in the game. It is excellent to see the increasing interest amongst the Indo players and teams.”
Nakasi Highlanders and Wainivula Eels are placed the top seeds, while South Seas Cruisers and Lautoka Central College are the new teams that will feature in the tournament.
“The top seeds were chosen based on their consistency and because Nakasi and Wainivula are the winners of the last two Indo tournament.”
“The news teams that will be competing have players who have never played rugby and this will be their first time playing. So we are looking forward to see an exciting tournament.”
Phillip says the Lautoka Indo Rugby Union is thankful to the organisers of the Veiyasa 7s for including the Indo 7s section in the tournament as well as the Lautoka Referees Association for their support.
“Following the tournament, the Fiji Indo Rugby Union (FIRU) will have their Annual General Meeting (AGM) to map out their strategic plan for 2014,” he adds.
The AGM will be chaired by FIRU Coordinator, Solo Finau of the Fiji Rugby Union.
