MINISTER FOR HEALTH DR. NEIL SHARMA MEETS ACCREDITED SOCIAL HEALTH ACTIVISTS (ASHAs) IN NEW DELHI – INDIA

The Minister for Health Dr. Neil Sharma as part of his visit to India visited the Delhi Government Health Center to examine the activitiesAccredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) which is community health workers instituted by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) as part of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

ASHAs are local women trained to act as health educators and promoters in their communities. The Indian MoHFW describes them as health activist(s) in the community who create awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilize the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services.

The Minister was briefed on the selection, remuneration, monitoring and evaluation of ASHA’s.

The Minister stated that the concept of ASHAs could be integrated with the current Rural Nursing programs.

The Fiji High Commissioner Yogesh Karan and Second Secretary, Om Goundar, accompanied the Minister during this field visit.
