PUBLIC ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND WOMEN’S CRAFT DISPLAY IN SUVA

The public has been invited to attend to attend the biggest craft show that will be held in the nation’s capital and will feature art and craft from women living in the Central Division.

The central women’s craft show has been organised by the Ministry of Women at the Civic Centre in Suva from Wednesday 22nd to Thursday 23rd July 2015.

More than 800 women groups from Tailevu, Rewa, Naitasiri, Namosi, Serua, Beqa, Navua and those living in the Nausori to Suva corridor have registered and are preparing to showcase their skills and talents at the two-day craft show. The Divisional craft shows are built up events to the National Women’s Expo which will be held at the Vodafone Arena, Suva from 14 to 16 October, 2015.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Rosy Akbar, says the event will provide marketing opportunities for the women especially those living in rural communities.

“The divisional craft shows are organised by the Ministry in partnership with the Fiji Arts Council, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and sponsors including Westpac Bank. The west craft show held in Shirley Park last week saw more than 500 women showcasing their talents and selling their products”.

“Those with the finest quality products will have the opportunity to further market their skills at the National Women’s Expo. We want to see women get the best value for their hard work and initiative. Creativity, originality are some of the qualities the judges will pay attention to when making the selection of products for the Expo,” Minister Akbar said.

The Minister added that such events, the Ministry can identify women groups to assist them further to become successful entrepreneurs.

“The National Women’s Expo is a platform for women to be economically empowered to uplift the lives of their families. Women have great potentials to earn income and alleviate poverty in their homes and communities. It is in recognition of their talents, the Ministry has organised crafts shows throughout the 4 divisions to help them utilize their maximum potential.

“To all the women in central division, please start preparing for the next month’s craft show to be held in Suva.  I look forward to seeing you there and we will support you throughout the Expo.

The dates and venues for the upcoming Divisional Craft Shows 2015 are as follows:

–  Thursday 2nd of July at Nawaikama Village, Sawaieke, Gau Island for the women from Gau, Nairai, Batiki.

–  Thursday 9th July, at Nabouwalu, women from Bua and northern division will participate in this show.

–  Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd July at Civic Centre in Suva, will see the participation of women from Tailevu, Rewa, Naitasiri, Namosi, Serua, Beqa, Navua and those living along Suva corridors to participate in the Central Division Craft show.
