The Governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Fiji established diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in New York today.
Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdallah Yahya Al-Mouallimi, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a protocol and joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two Governments.
The communiqué conveys the agreement of both States for their diplomatic relations to be guided by mutual willingness to develop and strengthen friendship and cooperation in accordance with the principles and norms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.
Following the formalization ceremony, Ambassadors Al-Mouallimi and Thomson held talks on areas of common interest between their two countries and areas of cooperation at the United Nations. Fiji’s long service in the cause of United Nations peacekeeping in the Middle East was acknowledged with great respect. Also discussed was the growing inter-regional cooperation between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Pacific Small Islands Developing States.
