Two killed, five injured as typhoon batters northern Philippines

MANILA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — Two people died and five other got injured as typhoon Koppu, locally named Lando, continued to batter the northern Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Monday.

As of 12 a.m. local time, the NDRRMC said, a total of 20,492 persons were affected in the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol and Cordillera Administrative Region, with 18 road sections and 13 bridges becoming not impassable.

Heavy to intense rain swamped most of Luzon and massive flooding hit parts of Nueva Ecija and Aurora.

Powerful winds and heavy rain caused power interruptions in four cities and 71 municipalities in Luzon. Bad weather also led to the cancellation of 32 flights, with more than 6,000 passengers and 633 rolling cargoes stranded. Enditem.
