At 8.30pm on the 23rd of March 2013, Earth Hour will once again sweep around the world. Over six years ago Earth Hour was created to unite the global community and encourage people to take action and build a sustainable future for our planet.
Our small contribution at Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa kicks off on Saturday night with over thirty staff and invited guests volunteering to help mark the occasion. Director of Learning & Development Susan Waqanivere says ‘We’re very impressed to have such a great response from our staff. Together with our guests, staff will show their respect for the planet by joining together and placing lighted candles around the pool and grounds’.
The resort will illuminate every corner, from its beachfront and languid lagoon pool through to the grand bure-style lobby. Sofitel’s volunteers will wear Earth Hour T-Shirts and carry torches so they can assist and direct guests to dinner and other areas of the resort while this special event takes place.
The Hotel will also commemorate Earth Hour by creating a candlelight experience in our restaurants and bars and guests will be encouraged to turn off the lights in their room from 8.30pm until 9.30pm.
Susan said, “At twilight guests can also witness the beating of our traditional lali drum signaling the start of our French inspired candle and torch lighting ceremony. This ceremony is very fitting for the occasion and a traditional Fijian approach to celebrating Earth Hour you could say!”
Prior to Earth Hour, tiki torches will be lit along the resort beachfront and along the area leading up to the main lobby with a focal point being the pool area which will be decorated with more than 300 candles.
The resort will then turn off the lights surrounding the main entrance, main building, pool and pathway lights, which will have a wonderful dramatic effect.
