FIJI AND UNDP DISCUSS CLIMATE CHANGE COOPERATION – Strengthening Fiji’s relations with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) dominated talks held today in Suva between Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and the United Nations Development Project Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr Nicholas Rosellini.
5. HORTICULTURE CROP PRODUCTION AND MARKETING TRAINING – The Ministry of Agriculture in a bid to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff in the North for better service delivery this week organised a training on Horticulture Crop Production and Marketing.

His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau today received the Ambassador Extraordinary and plenipotentiary Designate of Hungary to the Commonwealth of Australia and Fiji Dr Attila Laszlo Gruber at Government House.
Ambassador Gruber was welcomed by the Head of State at Government House as he presented his letter of credence.
The non-resident ambassador graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Science of Janus Pannonius University of Pecs in 1984.
Ambassador Gruber was elected Member of Parliament and was elected incumbent in the local elections in October in Siofok for the fourth time.
Since 1995 he has been the head of local development and environmental committee and has been the chairman of the Siofok constituency since autumn of 2003.
Ambassador Gruber was an observer of the European Parliament from 2002 to 2004 and was member of the Hungarian parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
He will be based in Canberra.
2. MINISTER KUBUABOLA RECEIVES H.E AMBASSADOR GRUBER
Newly appointed non-resident Ambassador of Hungry to Fiji, H.E. Dr. Atilla Laszlo Gruber paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Suva today shortly after presenting his credentials to H.E. The President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau today.
H.E. Gruber used the opportunity to discuss the current refugee crisis being experienced in Hungry and also pledged his support to explore trade opportunities with Fiji.
H.E. Gruber also updated Hon. Minister Kubuabola on recent initiatives that Hungry was taking in respect of climate change.
Hon. Minister Kubuabola thanked H.E. Gruber for his visit and discussed the current status of Fiji’s Partnership Agreement with the European Union and also expressed his concern in respect of the current humanitarian crisis that Hungry was facing.
Hon. Minister Kubuabola also expressed his confidence for the continued positive relationship between both countries. H.E. Gruber was accompanied by Dr. Ferenc Toth, Deputy Head of Mission/Counsellor at the Embassy of Hungry in Canberra.

Minister Seruiratu expressed his appreciation in receiving the Ambassador and said that the meeting was an opportunity to discuss the possibilities of cooperation in the area of disaster management and environmental protection.
Minister Seruiratu said that Fiji’s priority is on the re-drafting of the disaster act, in addition to issues pertaining to climate change.
In response, Ambassador Gruber said that he was happy to be in Fiji and to have had the opportunity to discuss with Minister Seruiratu on opportunities and possibilities of cooperation in the agriculture sector.

Strengthening Fiji’s relations with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) dominated talks held today in Suva between Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and the United Nations Development Project Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr Nicholas Rosellini.
During their talks Mr Rosellini expressed his appreciation for the UNDP’s partnership with Fiji through their regional office in Suva, which also supports nine other Pacific Island nations.
Mr Rosellini expressed his desire to work together with Fiji in fostering a strong partnership in addressing the issue of climate change and its impact on the Pacific. Mr Rosellini also used the opportunity to congratulate Fiji on the successful hosting of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, which was recently held in Suva.
Minister Kubuabola also thanked Mr Rosellini for UNDP’s continued support to Fiji and updated him on the recent climate change summit held in Levuka. The Minister also updated him on the work carried out to finalise Fiji’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC’s) prior to the upcoming 21st Annual Conference of Parties (COP 21), taking place this year on 7-8 December in Paris.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, Ms Osnat Lubrani, accompanied Mr Rosellini to the meeting.
5. HORTICULTURE CROP PRODUCTION AND MARKETING TRAINING
The Ministry of Agriculture in a bid to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff in the North for better service delivery this week organised a training on Horticulture Crop Production and Marketing.
The training which started on Wednesday at the Principal Agriculture Officer’s conference room in Labasa is conducted by the staff of the Research Division of the Ministry.
Principal Research Officer (Horticulture) Shalendra Prasad said the transfer of technologies from the Ministry to the farmers and stakeholders is the responsibility of the Extension Division and they need the necessary information from their Research counterparts to up skill the staff.
“The training for these extension officers will include new technologies and information on vegetables, fruits and pulse production,” Mr Prasad said.
He said the importance of postharvest handling will be highlighted and a case study of the Participatory Guarantee Marketing system will be shared to these officers.
“The 24 participants will learn how to increase productivity, reduce employee turnover, decrease the need for supervision, increase ability to incorporate new technologies, help employees meet new responsibilities and increase job satisfaction, morale and motivation amongst the employees,” Mr Prasad added.
The training will end tomorrow with a practical activity for the participants which includes raising seedlings, grafting and rapid multiplication techniques of pineapple at the Seaqaqa Research Station.
