28 AUGUST 2015. A delay in the shipping of parts from overseas suppliers has set back repairs to Southern Taveuni’s three desalination plants, now rescheduled to resume operations towards the end of September. They were to start August 31.

The three desalination plants were installed as a temporary solution to replace the area’s main water source supplied from a borehole that suddenly went dry last year. This was attributed to a major shift in the rock formation that supported this underground water source.

Operating normally the desalination plants replaced the borehole providing sufficient water to satisfy the demand. But in April this year the plants faced mechanical difficulties and had to be shut down. Since then WAF continues to supply nine water trucks daily to the affected area.
