Digicel Fiji Welcomes ITU report

Wednesday 27 February – Digicel Fiji welcomes the latest findings on Fiji’s performance in delivering Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services and infrastructure to its citizens.  The research was administered by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies. Being the first to discover the findings of the report in Fiji, Digicel commends the Government for its initiative and investment in the sector.

Digicel Fiji’sHead of ICT, Mr. Craig Smith states, “The report by the International Telecommunication Union is an encouraging one for Fiji as we have performed exceptionally well for a small island nation competing with bigger, more developed ones”. He adds that ICTs underpin everything done in the modern world, and presently, each and every one was dependent on ICT networks and applications.

“ICThas helped manage and control everything from emergency services, water supplies, power networks and food distribution chains, to health care, education, government services, financial markets and local and international transportation,” he said.

“Fiji’s progress in the Global ICT arena is the result of the Government’s vision and commitment in developing the industry,” said Mr. Smith.

He added that Digicel strongly supported the government’s aim of establishing Fiji as the regional hub of telecommunications in the Pacific and bridging the digital divide between the rural and urban, the rich and the poor.

“In terms of ICT, Digicel has experienced exponential growth in just a few years and we are hence delighted with our contribution towards Fiji’s ICT Industry. We have successfully delivered cutting-edge business solutions to many Fijian businesses that now enjoy fast and reliable data transfer. Our ICT services include; International Private Lease Circuit (IPLC), which is available across the South Pacific, Managed Campus-wide Wireless Local Area Network (LAN) Service, Wi-Fi hotspots, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity Services,” added Mr. Smith.
