Fiji compensates remaining veterans for British nuclear tests

The Fijian government has provided payouts to veterans of the British government’s nuclear tests in the Pacific.Prime minister Frank Bainimarama announced today the payments for 24 members of the Fiji Nuclear Veterans Association.

They’re the only survivors from the 70 Fijian soldiers who were sent to take part in the British nuclear testing program on Christmas Island, in what is now Kiribati, in 1958.The government has said the payments will help compensate the veterans and their families for the medical costs they’ve faced since the tests.

Prime Minister Bainimarama described it as an historic occasion.
