A fishing expedition turned tragic for a 37 year old farmer after he was swept away by strong currents over the weekend.

The incident occurred yesterday at the Tore River mouth, Sigatoka.

The deceased had accompanied sixteen other villagers from Tore Village when the tragedy struck.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that he was dragging the fishing net with 16 other villagers when he was swept away by strong currents.

She also said the deceased was later pulled up and attempts to revive him proved futile. He was conveyed to the Sigatoka Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The drowning death toll currently stands at 2 compared to 4 for the same period last year. This latest incident will only be classified once the post mortem is conducted.
