The Melanesian Spearhead Group’s Eminent Persons Group is pleased with the progress taken so far in Fiji’s electoral process following meetings with members of the Fijian government including the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Group’s Chairman, Mr Kaliopate Tavola pointed out that their one week mission to Fiji has been successful with proposals being received by stakeholders including those from the private sector on how to strengthen the MSG Group.

The group pointed out that a key outcome of this mission to Fiji is the need to strengthen the trade sector within the MSG.

“The consultations in Fiji have been very encouraging across wide range of sector confirming a desire to enhance cooperation amongst MSG members. One of the important issues that have resonated throughout the consultations is the commitment for the MSG to become a robust trade and economic bloc”, said Mr Tavola.

In addition the EPG chairman expressed that the MSG is an organisation within the greater Pacific regionalism emphasizing that a strong MSG will contribute to a stronger Pacific.

The group is now expected to present a progress report to the MSG Secretariat following their missions within the MSG countries. The final report will be presented to the MSG Leaders at the Leaders Summit later this year.
