TEMPORARY BRIDGE TO BRING RELIEF

Relief is in sight for motorists and other commuters along Fletcher Road who have been using the detour after the closure of the Vatuwaqa Bridge last year.

Fiji Roads Authority’s bridge programme manager, Mr Don Clifford, said a temporary single lane crossing will be built at Vatuwaqa Bridge site along Fletcher Road.

He said the bridge will be a steel Bailey-type “similar to those used around the world for emergency or short term bridges”.

The temporary bridge will cater for large vehicles and buses and engineers have  assured  that the temporary structure will cope with the traffic flow in the area.

“The temporary single lane bridge will have traffic lights to ensure smooth flow of traffic. It will also cater to pedestrians with a footpath,” Mr Clifford said.

He said it was difficult to estimate the date of completion but FRA was working hard to ensure that the bridge opens in May,” Mr Clifford said.

The temporary structure will remain until the new bridge is designed and built.
