May 17, 2015. Kokomo Yaukuve Island, an upcoming luxury resort and Walker Corporation development, has sponsored the Fiji National University’s School of Aviation sports teams to the sum of $7,500 (FJD), demonstrating its ongoing commitment to Fiji.

This sponsorship will ensure the rugby and soccer teams are equipped with new playing jerseys ahead of the University’s upcoming inter-tertiary competition, later this month.

“We believe it’s important to support local clubs and sporting groups. Construction of the Resort commenced in 2012 and we established a partnership with the National University in 2013. It was agreed that we would use the University’s hangar facilities for the Resort’s helicopter operations. This has enabled the aviation students to benefit from helicopter mechanical experience and training,” said Brian Hearley, Helicopter Pilot at Yaukuve Island Resort.

“In the past we hired uniforms from established sports clubs in order for our teams to play at the inter-tertiary tournaments. This sponsorship and the new jerseys will definitely boost the team’s moral going into the competition,” said Keverieli Naitini, Air Craft Maintenance Engineering (Avionics) lecturer.

“The partnership with Walker Corporation has benefited us in numerous ways. With the Yaukuve Resort helicopter using the SOA hanger, our students have received first-hand experience in assisting in its maintenance. We are thankful for the partnership which has entered into its third year,” he added.

Brian Hearley presented the new jerseys to the sports teams at an official function, at the Fiji National University’s School of Aviation.

As with all projects, Walker Corporation favors employing local builders, suppliers and materials where possible. Development at the resort has generated wide spread employment opportunities for many Fijian’s, as will the Resort if it becomes operational.
