The Ba Women’s Forum today signed a contract with the Government of Japan for the construction of a two-storey training centre in Ba.

The contract will ensure the assistance of $492,900 through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects to empower people and community from the grassroots level.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mrs Rosy Akbar said the training center will boost the socio-economic status of rural dwellers.

“Our Government is very committed to give a facelift to the socio-economic status of women in Fiji and we are proud to have the kind support of Japanese government,” Mrs Akbar said.

The Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency, Mr Takuji Hanatani said the Ba Women’s Forum strives to improve the livelihoods of women in Ba but the lack of its own training facility hindered its existing training capabilities as well as its expansion into other training areas.

“Since 1990, Japan has provided assistance to Fiji through 325 GGP projects with total value being US$18 million. Upon completion this training centre will be a source of hope and inspiration to the women of Fiji,” H.E Hanatani said.

The training centre will have an office, a hall, a sewing room, a kitchen and two other training rooms. The project also involves the first workshop to be held at the centre, which will be a two-month training programme facilitated by experts in handicrafts and food preservation.

Ba Women’s Forum is an umbrella organization composed of 79 women’s club in Ba district.
