French President François HOLLANDE sends independence message to Fijian counterpart

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

Quote

“Mr President,

On the occasion of Fiji’s National Day, I am pleased to send you my warmest congratulations.

France has taken note of the positive developments in Fiji for a return to democracy in 2014. In particular, the promulgation of the constitution on September 6, 2013 was an important step in this process. France and the European Union support the organization of free and transparent elections in Fiji and encourage all efforts in this direction.

On another topic, the fight against the negative effects of climate change is a common challenge for our two countries. Aware of this challenge, France pursues an ambitious environmental diplomacy and offered to host the conference of parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP 21) in 2015. On this occasion, France wishes to achieve an international agreement that would be universal and binding. For this purpose, the support of the Pacific island countries will be a determining factor. I hope for Fiji’s support on this.

In conveying my best wishes, please accept, Mr President, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Signed: François HOLLANDE
