The outgoing Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, His Excellency Huang Yong paid a farewell visit to His Excellency the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at Government House today.

H.E Huang Yong also received the Honorary Officer of the Order of Fiji under the Fiji Honours system by Ratu Epeli for his distinguished services of a high degree to Fiji or humanity at large.

Ratu Epeli, who is the Chancellor of the Order of Fiji, thanked the outgoing Chinese Ambassador for the continuous support and strengthening relations between Fiji and China during his three and a half year term in Fiji.

Fiji established diplomatic relations with China in 1975, forming long-standing relations in political, economic, cultural and educational areas.

Some of the contributions by the Chinese Government to Fiji include increased scholarships to local students in Fiji, visa exemption for Fiji nationals visiting China and promotion of Chinese culture through the opening of a Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific.

 

The contribution by the Chinese also include major infrastructure projects designed to improve lives of ordinary Fijians.
