The Government of Papua New Guinea was welcomed the election of the Hon. Akilisi Pohiva MP, as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O’Neill CMG MP, wrote to Tonga’s new Prime Minister last week following his election.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Papua New Guinea, I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely congratulate you on your recent election as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga,” PM O’Neill said in his letter.

“Your ascension to the position of Prime Minister is indeed a milestone for your country and the Pacific region.

“Your election is also demonstration of the value and importance of the noble principles of democracy in the Pacific.”

PM O’Neill made the point that Papua New Guinea and Tonga continue to enjoy close and friendly ties and it is his intention to work closely with Tonga’s new Prime Minister to strengthen engagement.  He said this will be across all areas of trade and investment in agriculture and fisheries, as well as cultural, educational and sporting exchanges.

Throughout 2015 there will be a number of opportunities for people from Tonga and Papua New Guinea to meet including the Pacific Games and the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting in Port Moresby.

Prime Minister O’Neill concluded the letter highlighting the opportunity for the two leaders to meet, and reiterating his congratulations to Prime Minister Pohiva.

“I further look forward to welcoming you and your delegation in 2015 when Papua New hosts the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting.

“Congratulations once again and God Bless your Administration and the Kingdom of Tonga.”
