Police update- 26th March 2013

1. Money Laundering

A 69 year-old man is in police custody in Nadi after he was stopped by Customs officers at Nadi International Airport for failing to declare currency.

The following currencies were seized from him FJD$30,770.00, NZD$5420.00 and AUD$20.00.

Investigation continuing.

2. Fake Notes
A total of 10 cases of fake notes have been brought to our attention this year.
The recent case reported yesterday is from Samosa Garden Café in Nadi Airport, where a 33year old Shift Supervisor while going through the night cash bag found a $50.00 note serial number FFA0063899 believed to be fake.
The note has been seized for verification.
We are advising members of the public particularly businesses to be alert when handling money and report any suspicious transactions to your nearest police station or community post, or call 919 or 917.

3. Fire

Two cases of fire were reported yesterday, firstly around 1125pm last night at Nanuku settlement, Vatuwaqa, 4 Bedroom house made of corrugated iron and timber property of Naresh Narayan, 48year old, businessman was completely destroyed by fire with its content.

Three bodies believed to be suspect’s wife, daughter and son were discovered from the fire.

A suspect is in police custody and investigations are continuing.

In another incident a 47 year old fisherman of Bangladesh squatter settlement in Bulileka, Labasa lost his 20ft x 35ft, 3 bedroom house made up of corrugated iron and timber.

The house was completely destroyed with its contents.

Estimated cost of damage is $25,000.00.

Cause of the fire is yet to be established as investigations continue.
