By SANDHYA NARAYAN

Men and women in the age group above 60s are leading the way for health and will be actively participating in sports for health including Race Walk, touch rugby, netball, volley ball and netball.

Around 300 people from all age group from communities around Nubu will be participating in the festival of sports on Saturday 27th at Nubu Primary school.  Mela (Hindi word for festival) Ni Waqe was launched by Dr Jone Hawea, the clinical registrar at Labasa hospital in June to try and encourage all age groups to participate in community sports toward building healthy communities. Dr Hawea said he was greatly concerned at the rate of amputations his team was conducting in Labasa. He developed the sports program in partnership with FRIEND to encourage fun filled physical activity for all age groups. FRIEND works in the communities with backyard garden, health screening and NCD management and continuous exercise programs.

Tui Nubu who will be officiating at the event will also take part in the Race Walk.  Senior health officials will also be present at the event.
