Digicel customers now have free browsing on popular research website Wikipedia

Thursday 23rd July 2015 – Digicel Fiji has today launched free access to Wikipedia on its mobile network. Digicel customers don’t have to subscribe to a data plan nor will they incur charges to browse the largest collection of free knowledge via Wikipedia.

”With last year’s introduction of 4G services and with the growing number of smartphone users, mobile phones are now an essential part of education and learning. We are delighted, for the first time in Fiji, to be bringing Wikipedia’s knowledge base to our customers at no charge,” said Digicel Fiji Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Darren McLean.

“Researching and educating one on various topics and areas of interest while on the go has now become more affordable”.

“We have worked to develop this service to ensure that Fijian school children and University students have access to the knowledge on Wikipedia without barriers on mobile phones with no data charge. Our customers tend to use their smartphones for research and seeking out information on a daily basis. We understand the importance of education and the need to have access to information, especially amongst the youth, this is a social benefit by making the site free since we will be providing free access to a valuable educational resource.”

Wikipedia is a collaborative creation by volunteer editors from all over the world. Across its more than 280 language versions Wikipedia contains more than 33 million articles, attracting nearly half a billion unique visitors every month and more than 20 billion monthly page views.

Wikipedia is available for all Digicel users via a free app downloadable in the Google Play store, the iTunes store, or at www.wikipedia.org
