There is an urgent need for a fresh approach to rejuvenate agriculture in the rural areas with a more holistic approach such as rural transformation says the Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Hon Inia Seruiratu.

This week, while delivering his statement at the 38th Session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development(IFAD), Governing Council in Rome, the Minister said while agriculture is central to Fiji’s economic agenda, it average contribution to GDP has declined and as such a new approach will transform rural areas into providing improved livelihood and economic opportunities for our people.

“The Fiji Government is already committed to this in the development of the Fiji 2020 Agriculture Policy Agenda which is a plan to modernise the industry,” he said.

Minister Seruiratu joined 176 development leaders, heads of states and government representatives that gathered for the opening of the 38th Session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome who called for additional investments towards the transformation of key rural areas to the world’s food supply.
