Israel has a new Ambassador to Fiji, Shmuel Ben-Shmuel, who today presented his credentials to His Excellency the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, in a ceremony at Government House.
The Ambassador later paid a courtesy call on the Attorney General and Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, who presented him with a copy of the Fijian Constitution.
In his talks with the AG, Mr Ben-Shmuel said Israel appreciated an invitation from Fiji to send observers for the General Election on September 17th and both Governments were in the process of finalising the details. He spoke of Israel’s appreciation for its friendly and open relationship with Fiji and looked forward to promoting that relationship through other areas of cooperation.
The Ambassador – who is non-resident and is based in Canberra – also serves as Israeli envoy to Australia. During a 34 year career with the Israeli Ministry for Foreign Affairs, he has held senior postings in the United States and South Africa and has been the head of Israel’s World Jewish Affairs and Inter-Religious Affairs Bureau.
