Wellington to Assist Cricket Fiji

Cricket Fiji will have the assistance of Wellington Cricket Coaching Director, Mark Borthwick for a week working with National Coach Joeli Mateyawa in preparing the national side for the all important World Cricket League Division 7 (WCL 7) Tournament in Botswana.

“Mark comes with wealth of experience in coaching and will be of great benefit to the side in this important stage of preparation” said Cricket Fiji High Performance Manager, Joe Rika.

Mr. Borthwick had previously worked with the side in Auckland earlier in the year when the national team took part in the EAP Mens T20 Competition in February.

Mr. Borthwick is originally from South Africa but moved to Wellington where he continued a career in teaching before taking up coaching as a fulltime role with Cricket Wellington.

“Mark has been involved with the New Zealand Womens side, the Wellington Firebirds and Blaze which are the Wellington state sides as well as their underage teams. Obviously he has a lot of experience on the international stage and Cricket Fiji will look to get as much from Mark”, said Rika.

The side has two more weeks of preparation before leaving our shores on the 28th for Botswana where they have a week’s preparation in Gaborone before the start of the tournament.

The national side needs to finish in the top 2 in order to qualify for the next division which is scheduled for later in the year in Europe.

The national side plays their first match against Nigeria on the 6th of April.
